There have been numerous studies that have shown the benefits of doula support during labor and birth. Some of these benefits include:
- Shorter labors with fewer complications
- Less requests for epidural and/or other pain medications
- Decrease use of oxytocin (pitocin) to stimulate labor
- Decreased use of forceps
- Lower rates of cesarean birth
- Mothers report greater satisfaction with their birth experience
- Fathers also report greater satisfaction with the birth and more comfort with supporting their wives appropriately
Longer term positive effects of doula support on new families include:
- More success with breastfeeding
- Lower rates of postpartum depression
- Greater self-confidence
- Stronger parent-infant bonding
The benefits of doula support are clear and there are no known risks to doula support. The Doula Book, Klaus, Kennell, and Klaus, 2002
